GRISMAN "Shady Grove" Bluegrass & folk fans will most likely already
know that the late Grateful Dead guru, Garcia, had a real love for
bluegrass, blues, and other "roots" music . This beautifully packaged
13-song collection will confirm this in a big way. He combines on a
variety of instruments with David Grisman in a fascinating array of
songs that would hardly be thought to be associated in any way with
rock music: THE HANDSOME CABIN BOY, FAIR ELLENDER, I TRULY UNDERSTAND
YOU LOVE ANOTHER MAN, THE SWEET SUNNY SOUTH, LOUIS COLL INS, CASEY
JONES and DREADFUL WIND RAIN among others. Jerry's voice is--well,
Jerry's voice: he has a monumental struggle with I TRULY UNDERSTAND,
and is rough as a cob on much of the other material, but it seems
apparent that that is of no great import to your average "Dead" fan.
There is a certain curious charm to these renditions. The packaging
of this CD is stunning, with an absolutely lovely full color booklet
that documents the origins of each song.
